LOT NUMBER 22
Chinese carved hardwood frame, 1920s
This is a striking Chinese wood frame densely and deeply carved with a mixture of symbols, stylised flowers and dragons. The ground is finely incised with closely packed micro dots and on it we see two roundels resembling ‘shou’ medallions, various abstract geometric patterned shapes, scrolling flowers, mainly lotus, and two dragons at the top left and bottom right corners. The style of carving suggests early C20th work and the wood is possibly boxwood as indicated by the traces of yellow which can be seen (images 3,4,5) and are a hallmark of the type. Perhaps originally intended to hold a mirror (the composition is really too distracting for presenting a porcelain or fabric panel) this piece can be used today as its new owner wishes and will considerably enhance whatever it displays.Size: | 28cm x 33.5cm (frame) 12.8cm x 17.7cm (interior opening) |
