LOT NUMBER 17
Blue Ground Empire Style Powder Box and Cover, Jean Pouyat, Limoges circa 1900
This is a fine quality powder box and cover made by the firm Jean Pouyat who were based in Limoges, France. The piece comprises two flattened bulbous sections which form the base and lid. The rich deep blue glaze, sometimes known as Mazarine blue (the name possibly deriving from Cardinal Mazarin, prime minister of France, 1601-62) is combined with heavily modelled gilt decoration of repeating laurel leaves, the imperial symbolism continued in the gilt eagle with arrows on the lid which was the military standard of France in Napoleonic times. On the underneath can be seen a slightly worn gilt mark with a stylised brick structure (a kiln?) with the letter ‘P’ visible to the right and ‘FRANCE’ below. Other clearer versions of the mark show a ‘J’ to the left and this was a factory mark for Jean Pouyat a celebrated manufacturer of porcelain at Limoges in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work was of high quality and exported worldwide, particularly to America. Other pieces, for example a comport, are known in this pattern which must have been a deluxe production in its time and retains its opulence now.Size: | 9.5cm x 5.5 cm |
