LOT NUMBER 16
Oriental Style Vase, West German Pottery, possibly Scheurich, late C20th
An Oriental Style Vase, the body of baluster form with a ribbed shoulder and a slender slightly flaring neck, the bottom with a spreading foot and ridged bands, the base glazed to the centre with an unglazed foot rim, covered in a purple flambé glaze with mottled effects. While Chinese in style overall, the paste of the foot clearly indicates European manufacture and is very similar to that found on some West German pottery pieces; the brown glazing at the interior top rim reflects West German work as well. The most likely candidate is the firm Scheurich Keramik who were well known for their experimental glazes. Three other examples of their work are included in this sale. Not all of their pieces were marked and this may well be a slightly later example of their work, perhaps dating to the 1980s. Certainly it is a fine quality piece and the elegantly potted form is combined with complex glaze decoration which would not have been easy to achieve and certainly can match that of its Chinese counterparts.Size: | Ht 36cm, Width (max) 16cm, Base Diam 12cm |
