LOT NUMBER 15
Pair of Art Deco style Avon Ware Vases, 1930s
A pair of ceramic vases of bulbous ovoid form with flaring necks decorated in splash form segments of blue, yellow and green, the slightly matt glaze with a light craquelure effect, the base with a round stamped mark ‘AVON WARE MADE IN ENGLAND’ and moulded marks ‘MADE IN ENGLAND BRISTOL’. The firm Avon Ware seems to have commenced production in Bristol in the 1930s. The constraints of war time restrictions limited its output considerably and it appears to have relocated to Staffordshire in the 1940s at Longton, Stoke on Trent, where it remained in business until 1968, unfortunately then falling into liquidation. Their pre war pieces were distinctive and rather different to their later ones. They also share the round stamped mark seen here. This pair of vases are an interesting example, very much looking to the Art Deco styles so fashionable at the time although the decoration can also be seen as distinctively modern. The colour combination is striking and decorative and well sets off the elegant and simple shape.Size: | Ht 16cm, Width (max) 11cm, Base 7.5cm |
