LOT NUMBER 9
Pair of Art Deco style Wall Pocket Vases, Poole Pottery, mid C20th
A pair of wall pocket vases of urn form with scrolling handles, a crimped base and a scalloped top, the backs flat with one pierced hole for hanging, kiln spur marks and impressed marks ‘POOLE ENGLAND’ ‘879’ and a stamped mark ‘C 54’, both glazed in shades of cream and brown. Poole Pottery began production in 1873 and continued into and throughout the twentieth century, suffering vicissitudes and even periods of liquidation in more recent years but still continuing production to this day. The design of these wall pockets has an Art Deco feel and may have been originally created in the 1930s but was still being made into the 1950s. The two colour or ‘twintone’ decoration was also first produced in the 1930s and the form of the marks here, where the just the factory name appears without the ubiquitous dolphin, may well indicate a pre war rather than post war dating. The impressed numbers indicate the model number and the stamped mark the colour scheme. Pairs of these wall pockets in good condition are not often found and the particular colour range here, which is rather pleasing, is unusual. Desirable items, then for collectors of Poole Pottery but also with a general decorative appeal.Size: | H 15.5 cm, W 12 cm, D 4 cm |
