LOT NUMBER 14
West German Pottery Lava Glaze Vase, Scheurich, 1960s
A ceramic vase of squat cylindrical form, the body incurving at the shoulder and the neck with a slightly flaring rim, the heavily pitted glazes combining mottled blues above and black below, the interior glazed brown and the base glazed black with moulded marks ‘215-18’ and ‘W.Germany’. This is an excellent example of ‘lava ware’, a rugged and rustic glaze effect which became very popular in the 1960s and was produced extensively by some of the West German potteries of the period. The marks here indicate the firm ‘Scheurich Keramik’ which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Similar pieces by them can be found in either form or decoration. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. The size and form of this piece makes it particularly attractive.Size: | H 18 cm, Diameter 14.75 cm |
