LOT NUMBER 16
Continental Earthenware Vase with geometric motifs in the style of Amphora, C20th
An unusual earthenware vase of squat ovoid shape with a short cylindrical neck, heavily enamelled with a design of repeating Chinese style geometric motifs in black with polychrome stylised lotus flowers all on a cream coloured ground, the neck and foot glazed black with repeating mottled green tinted stylised lotus leaves below and above, the interior glazed cream and the base glazed mustard both with a light craquelure effect. In common with another abstract decorated vase in this sale, there are no clear parallels for this piece but the work here does resemble that of the well known Austrian firm Amphora which may give some indication of the country of manufacture. The chinoiserie influenced motifs used do suggest Art Nouveau and an early twentieth century dating seems reasonable but despite the uncertainties this is certainly a piece of arresting appeal, highly suitable as an accent accessory.Size: | 21 cm H, 16 cm W |
