LOT NUMBER 21
Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jug circa 1900
A Doulton stoneware Jug the near globular body with a broad straight neck and a pinched spout, a ribbed loop handle to the reverse with a moulded floral terminal, the lower section with a matt textured glaze and applied modelled flower heads in white black and blue, the upper section with a glossy brown glaze, a band of moulded repeating stylised floral devices resembling Chinese ‘ju’i’ lappets and horizontal ribbing, the unglazed base with impressed marks ‘DOULTON’ LAMBETH’ ‘ENGLAND’ (?) ‘hu’ ‘9558’. This form of Doulton mark was used on smaller pieces from 1891 to 1956 but a clearer indication of dating comes from the model number (9558) which seems to indicate that this particular piece was first made circa 1890 to 1900. The two lower case letters indicate the artist but unfortunately identification is not possible. The slightly rustic appearance of this jug corresponds with contemporary pieces from the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movement and contributes to an item of great charm.Size: | 15 cm H, 13 cm W |
