Porcelain Figure of a seated Panda, Lomonosov, USSR late C20th
This is an amusing figure of a seated Panda looking enquiringly outwards and with its paws clasped together, the fur depicted in black with flecking and the face with expressive eyes and mustard colouring to the snout, signed to the base with a red stamped cipher device and the rather indistinct lettering ‘MADE IN USSR’. The cipher device in iron red is for the Lomonosov, factory situated in St Petersburg. With a history of production spanning back to the mid eighteenth century, Lomonosov became well known for its ceramic figures of animals in the mid twentieth century, expressively modelled and brightly coloured, including tigers, giraffes, dogs and, as here, pandas. This figure comes from the 'Porcelain Zoo' series created by the sculptor Pavel Veselov and the artist Victor Zhbanov and apparently comprising around a hundred different figurines. Dating here is determined by the form of the mark which was used from 1986 to 1992. Red was reserved for the best quality pieces and the mark itself is in the Russian alphabet (ЛФЗ), that is ‘LFZ’ in English which is an abbreviation of the factory name ‘Lomonosovkiy Farforoviy Zavod’. The words ‘MADE IN USSR’ may imply that the piece was intended for export. It would be hard not to imagine someone somewhere giving this animal a new home!Size: | 13 cm H, 9 cm W |
