LOT NUMBER 11
Square Cake Plate, Masons Ironstone, early C20th
A square serving dish or cake plate, the edges slightly indented and the sides with two modelled openwork handles, the cream coloured glaze with a light craquelure and decorated with colourful transfer pattern designs in a pseudo Oriental style of lotus flowers and birds, the handles with small modelled fruit in blue, yellow, green, black and red, the reverse with a glazed foot and a transfer mark ‘Mason’s’ and ‘Patent Ironstone China’ between a crown and ‘England’ with script lettering below ‘C 2071’ [the ‘2’ with an additional downwards brushstroke] ‘WS’ and (?) the number ‘3’ to the right, also with impressed numbers ‘0’ ‘342’ above to the left.Mason’s Ironstone was one of the staples of English pottery production during the nineteenth century. Patented in 1813 by Charles Mason, this highly durable ware was used to produce tea or dinner sets and vases, decorated in colourful Chinese style transfer pattern designs with overpainted details. The firm was bought by Ashworth in 1861 who continued to make pieces in the range through until the twentieth century. The pattern number here (‘C’ plus orange numerals) commencing with a ‘2’ dates this dish to the 1920s and the form of the mark also indicates a later dating but it is still an attractive reminder of a grand and popular style.
