LOT NUMBER 23
West German Vase, Model No 268-40, Scheurich, 1960s
A cylindrical ceramic vase with a short concave neck and flaring rim, incurving towards the base, the body modelled with five bands of a repeating abstract geometric designs separated by four concave rings and glazed overall in speckled tones of mustard, ochre and brown, the base with moulded marks ‘268-40’ and ‘W. GERMANY’.Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. Model ‘480’ (which sometimes occurs complete with a paper label for Scheurich) can be found in a variety of different glazes but the colourings here are amongst the most successful. Dating is to the 1960s.
