LOT NUMBER 19
Lomonosov Teapot decorated Cockerels, late C20th
This is a fine quality teapot of compressed globular form with a short straight foot, a flaring neck fitted with a countersunk domed cover and a curving loop shape spout and handle. The base has a stamped mark in iron red which is for the Lomonosov factory situated in St Petersburg. With a history of production spanning back to the mid eighteenth century, Lomonosov has continued manufacturing up to the present day. Dating here is determined by the form of the mark which was used from 1986 to 1992. Red was reserved for the best quality pieces and the mark itself is in the Russian alphabet (ЛФЗ), that is ‘LFZ’ in English which is an abbreviation of the factory name ‘Lomonosovkiy Farforoviy Zavod’. In addition are the words ‘Made in USSR’ implying that the piece was intended for export. There are also two small marks, possibly for the model number and the decorator. Lomonosov pieces were always known for the high quality of their execution and while fairly recent, this teapot is an excellent example of their work with a striking and attractive design.Size: | H 9 cm, W 15 cm, D 9.5 cm |
