LOT NUMBER 20
Lomonosov Teapot in the form of a Samovar, late C20th
This is another teapot from the Lomonosov factory but in the rather unusual design of an adapted samovar with a teapot on the top acting as the lid. The conventional samovar form used in Russia had an urn shaped base with a spigot for the release of hot water. A teapot surmounted it in which the tea was brewed. Here the base is in the form of a teapot not an urn and the lid merely acts as a decorative accompaniment. This novelty form seems to have been developed by the Lomonosov factory in the late twentieth century and can be purchased new today. Various examples can be found with widely different marks underneath but sharing the same shape and decoration (by repute known as ‘sunny day’ and attributed to the designer L. I. Grigoryeva). The mark underneath includes the Russian letter cipher for Lomonosov often found (ЛФЗ), that is ‘LFZ’ in English which is an abbreviation of the factory name ‘Lomonosovkiy Farforoviy Zavod’, but also the word ‘Russia’ which dates the piece post 1991 after the fall of the USSR. But if fairly late in the series of pieces produced by Lomonosov, there is no relaxation in the quality here and fine hard paste porcelain is combined with detailed and skilful decoration to produce a work of great appeal.Size: | H 19 cm, W 17 cm, D 9.5 cm |
