LOT NUMBER 12
Novelty Bonnet Posy Vase, 1940s/1950s
This is an amusing posy vase for the display of small flowers in the form of a straw bonnet, yellow, slightly craquelure effect, glazed with modelled moulded decoration to the hat rim and crown, the latter with a green glazed tied ribbon, and a deep channel in between to hold the floral display, the underside with a ‘C’ shape foot with a printed mark ‘Made in England’ to the centre and the pattern number impressed at the side ‘REG No 837952’. Some similar pieces have a printed mark ‘Falcon Ware’ and others a printed mark ‘SYLVAC’. Falcon Ware was made by Thomas Lawrence (Longton) Ltd and Sylvac Ware (often marked ‘SylvaC’) by Shaw and Copestake, both firms being founded in the late 1800s. The two firms worked independently for over thirty years but amalgamated in the mid 1930s and during the 1940s shared the Thomas Lawrence factory for a time. Models and designs were often shared which explains the different markings on these posy vases which are otherwise near identical. Dating is probably to the post war period, either late 1940s or early 1950s, when Sylvac in particular produced many novelty items which are collected today.Size: | Diameter 23 cm, H 4 cm |
