Pair of Price Bros Dover Bud Vases, 1930s
A pair of small Art Deco style vases of angular baluster form with a short foot, a flaring neck and angular loop handles to the sides, covered all over in a mottled green and beige glaze, the foot with impressed marks ‘Made in England’ ‘Dover’ and printed black/grey marks ‘PRICE Bros’ within a wreath and ‘Made in England’. The style is that of the 1930s which is consistent with pieces made by the English potteries, Price Bros, at that time.Price Bros was an earthenware manufacturer established at the Crown Works, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in 1896 by the Price brothers. They specialised in tabletop accessories and teapots and success was rapid such that in 1934 they moved to larger premises at the Top Bridge Works in Longport, where they became known as Price Bros Ltd. A close association with another firm, Kensington Potteries, was finally cemented when the two firms merged in 1962 taking on the name ‘Price and Kensington’ and continuing to manufacture their popular wares to the present day.
Intended as ornaments and probably for the display of small flowers, this pair of vases is a typical reflection of the Art Deco style so popular before the second World War. Although modest accessories at the time, they were made with care and retain their decorative appeal today.
