LOT NUMBER 1
Pair of Small Milk Jugs, German possibly E.S.Prussia, circa 1900
A matching pair of small jugs, probably for milk, the globular body with a cylindrical neck and a sharply pointed spout, a simple loop handle to the side, decorated in polychrome enamels with finely painted birds and flowers on a light beige ground, the designs in mirror image and with the reverses plain, the handles in black enamel and the bases plain with very feint traces of impressed markings. The form and decoration here suggest the influence of the Art Nouveau style and dating is probably to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Both appearance and the paste of the foot suggest German manufacture and similar pieces are held to have been made by the firm ‘ES Prussia’, one of the firms founded by Erdmann Schlegelmilch whose various factories produced ceramics from the early 1860s to the late 1930s. But whether as ‘ES Prussia’, ‘ES Germany’ or ‘ES Suhl’, Suhl in Germany being the location of Schlegelmilch’s first concern, the pieces are usually marked which does not seem to be the case here. But these are fine quality products, whatever their source, with considerable decorative appeal.Size: | 16 x 12 cm |
