LOT NUMBER 6
Pair of Vintage Art Deco style armchair Pipe Rests, English c1930
A pair of small ceramic armchairs modelled in typical Art Deco style with deep rectangular sides, grooved arm rests, a tilted back and a thick padded cushion, glazed overall in turquoise/green, the bases unglazed with a central hole. The form here, typical of the 1930s, is usually regarded as a smoker’s accessory, the seat acting as a pipe rest and the grooved chair arms intended for cigarettes. There are no factory markings, although Denby is sometimes suggested, but we are clearly looking at something from the years before the second World War and if these miniature chairs are less ‘functional’ today they remain entertaining and appealing decorative items, rarely found as a matching pair.Size: | H 6 cm W 7 cm D 5.5 cm |
