LOT NUMBER 5
Doulton Vase with geometric and floral designs, late 1920s
A Doulton vase of ovoid form with a short concave neck and an inturned rim, brightly decorated in colourful enamels with modelled geometric and floral designs and with a mottled green/grey glaze below and beige above, the interior glazed brown at the top and the base unglazed with a typical impressed mark for Royal Doulton and the numbers ‘X8828’ ‘9869’ and also with scratched marks ‘WB’ ‘AT’. After the grant of a Royal Warrant in 1901, Doulton pieces carried a standard form of mark comprising a lion and crown above the name Royal Doulton and the '4D' symbol but from 1922–1927 a mark lacking the crown was used as here which allows a fairly precise dating for this piece. The numbers are for the model and pattern and the initials are artists’ marks, but unfortunately these cannot be identified. Made at a time when the Art Nouveau movement was nearing its end and the Art Deco style making its beginning, this vase reflects both, the floral decoration looking backwards and the abstract shapes looking forwards. The Doulton designers made great efforts to match the trends of their day and the result here is unusual and most attractive.Size: | Ht 27cm, Width (max) 13cm, Base 8cm |
