LOT NUMBER 17
Blue and Green Ice Glass Square Bowl, possibly Pukeberg, late C20th
A heavily modelled glass bowl of rounded square form with raised corners and indented concave sides with a textured base underneath, the clear glass blended with green and blue glass, each of the colours covering half the surface of the interior with a diagonal 'join'. The weight and textured finish to this piece is clearly intended to represent ice and 'ice glass' pieces were made by various Scandinavian manufacturers, notably Pukeberg of Sweden who produced many 'ice glass' pieces in a 'modernist' style in the 1970s although these seem to be just in clear glass. A very similar bowl was made in the 1970s by Ittala, a glass studio in Finland, and this has colouration similar to the bowl here, but Ittala pieces tend to be signed with the factory name, and often that of their designer Tapio Wirkalla, whereas there is no discernible signature here. 'Scandinavian 1970s' is perhaps the safest bet then but this does not detract from the appeal of a bold statement item which has the potential to be functional as well.Size: | 10 cm high, 19.5 cm wide |
