LOT NUMBER 16
Sommerso Blue Glass Vase, probably Scandinavian 1960s
A fine quality glass vase of upright rounded rectangular form, tapering towards the top and with an ovoid neck, blue glass and clear glass combined in a technique known as ‘sommerso’ (Italian ‘submerged’) whereby two or more layers of contrasting glass are created without the colours mixing together. Sommerso pieces are formed by dipping coloured glass into molten glass of a different colour, before blowing the glass into the required form and the technique was developed by the Murano factory in Venice. Murano pieces similar to this but more complex in form and design are known but the technique was also used by Scandinavian firms, notably Kosta (another of whose clear glass pieces is included in this auction, designed by Vicke Lindstrand who also, incidentally, produced ‘sommerso’ technique items). No exact parallel can be found either with Kosta pieces or indeed those produced by other Scandinavian factories but Scandinavian rather than Italian manufacture seems most likely and a dating to the 1960s reasonable since the simple and elegant form resembles many other pieces from that era.Size: | Ht 27cm, Base 9.5cm x 5cm |
