LOT NUMBER 14
Caithness glass vase from the Rondo range, late C20th
A small glass vase of broad pear shape with a slightly flaring rim in a lilac and pink speckled swirl design. Similar pieces can be found either boxed or with the original label which confirms both the maker of this vase and the range from which it came, ‘Rondo’. Caithness Glass was established in Wick, Caithness, Scotland in 1961 by Robin Sinclair, 2nd Viscount Thurso but changed hands in 1966 when George Mackie, Baron Mackie of Benshie, took it over in 1966, remaining Chairman for twenty years. The company specialised in the manufacture of paperweights and some ornamental glassware, receiving a royal warrant from the Queen Mother in 1968. By 1995, manufacturing was carried out at Perth where the firm’s headquarters became based. The company unfortunately went into receivership twice in 2004 and 2006 and was eventually purchased by Dartington Crystal who continued its production. The ‘Rondo’ range was created in the 1980s and is a typical example of the pieces Caithness produced.| Size: | Ht 11.5cm, Top diam 5cm, Diam (max) 6.5cm, Base 4cm |
