LOT NUMBER 12
Cream coloured milk glass vase with bird, French early C20th
Milk glass, now so called, was developed in Venice in the 16th century as a competitor for porcelain. Opaque and translucent it was made in a wide variety of colours and was later to enjoy great popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when it was produced by various manufacturers in England, Europe and America. The style of decoration here suggests France and the simple design of a bird sitting on a branch with flowers is attractively combined with a slightly sandy cream coloured background. This was most likely one of an original pair designed as mantelpiece ornaments, the slightly Art Nouveau and Japan inspired design suggesting an early twentieth century dating, but its elegance remains today.| Size: | Ht 25.5cm, Width (max) 10cm, Base 7.3cm |
