Czech glass bowl from the Niagara range designed by Karel Zemek for Mstisov, 1960s

An organic form bowl or ash tray of irregular triangular shape with nodules blown in a subtle blending of blue, deep pink and clear glass. This piece comes from the ‘Niagara’ range designed by Kaerl Zemek for the Mstisov glassworks in Czechoslovakia. Founded in 1868 by F. Fischmann & Sons, the firm began to produce innovative pieces in the 1950s created by Frantisek Zemek, their chief designer at the time. Frantisek Zemek died of an accident in 1960 but his brother Karel continued his work until he too passed away in 1965. Mstisov became part of the Borske Sklo National Corporation in 1958 and was sold to Moser in 1964 who continued production of its range for a few further years. This bowl, then, dates to the 1960s and is a fine example of Mstisov’s output.
