LOT NUMBER 25
Murano striped canne glass Bottle and Stopper with labels, second half C20th
A bottle, or perhaps decanter, and stopper, the cylindrical body very slightly tapering towards the inwards curving shoulder below a shirt flaring rim, the base countersunk, the stopper with a pointed finial above a circular base with a broad ‘wand’ below, the glass with stripes in tones of green and blue. The decoration here, almost harlequin like, is termed ‘canne’ from the ‘canes’ or tubes of glass which were used to form it, a traditional Murano technique. But in this case it is not necessary to rely on the characteristics of manufacture since the piece is clearly marked, both with a ‘Murano’ label and then with the label for the ‘Consorzio Venezia Vetro’ a body formed in 1975 which guaranteed the authenticity of glass from the island of Murano until it was succeeded by the ‘Vetro Artistico Murano’ whose labels came into use since 2002. ‘050’ designated the particular member of the group who made this piece and who produced a striking example of Murano craftsmanship most likely dating from the 1980s/early 1990s.| Size: | Ht 32cm (overall); Bottle Ht 25cm, Top diam 4.5cm, Width (max) 11cm, Base 11cm; Stopper : Length 10.5cm, Width (max) 3.5cm |
