Art Deco Amber Glass Bowl and Frog, probably STS Abel, Yugoslavia, 1930s
An amber glass bowl of shallow circular form with a wide turnover rim interrupted by two dolphin form handles with a circular glass ‘frog’ or flower holder, the central hole surrounded by twelve smaller holes, the pressed glass with wavy geometric design panels to the interior of the bowl and a geometric pattern roundel at the centre, the rim with a border of swimming fish complementing the handles. This bowl is attributed to the Jugoslav glassworks STS Abel, a conglomerate formed by the merger of four glass factories in 1921 to form the ‘Sjedinjene Tvornice Stakla N.D’ (STS) which translates as United Glass Factories. Their head office was in Zagreb and production continued until the end of the second world war when all the glassworks in Jugoslavia were nationalised under Marshall Tito's communist regime. Some of their pieces carry an impressed mark of a stemmed goblet within a star and some a paper label which, if the attribution is correct, is missing here.
The design is distinctive but very much in the Art Deco style and resembles similar pieces produced by contemporary English manufacturers such as Sowerby. It is unusual to find one of these bowls complete with its original flower holder.
