LOT NUMBER 6
Glass basket designed by Sulo Grönberg for Oy Kumela, Finland, 1970s
A glass basket, the rounded bowl base with two near circular ‘handles’ in the form of snakes, their heads meeting at the centre, the teal glass at the bottom merging into clear glass towards the top. This piece resembles others made for the Finnish glassworks, Oy Kumela, and held to have been designed by Sulo Grönberg, one of the artists working for them in the 1960s and 1970s. The fluid lines and blending of the glass colourings can be seen in other works by him, some of which are signed.Kumela Glass was founded by the Kumela family at the glass making centre Riihimäki, Finland, in 1933. Producing at first utility wares it moved onto producing decorative art glass in the 1960s, employing skilled designers such as Kaj Blomqvist and Armando Jacobino. In the 1970s, the firm was sold by the Kumela family to Humppila Glass who continued to produce pieces with their name until the 1980 when it too was bought by the Wärtsilä group.
