LOT NUMBER 4
Modernist hobnail design glass Vase, Ancencis, J.G.Durand, France, late C20th
A crystal glass vase of cylindrical form with a recessed foot, heavily cast with a geometric pattern design, sometimes termed ‘hobnail’ of projecting shaped ‘knobs’ in five separated bands, the top and bottom with a complementary shaped surface. This near abstract design, which almost qualifies for the term ‘brutalist’, was a product of the well known French glass makers J.G.Durand and formed part of their range called ‘Ancencis’, after the town with the same name, more properly called ‘Ancenis’, situated on the right bank of the Loire River in the Pays de la Loire region and famous for the medieval Château d'Ancenis. J.G.Durand began manufacturing glassware in the 1820s and its innovatory techniques developed in the mid twentieth century allowed the production of modestly priced crystal glass which was marketed under the brands Cristal d’Arques, Luminarc, and Arcoroc. This vase was probably produced by Cristal d’Arques in the 1980s and its modest price is no reflection on the quality of its manufacture.| Size: | Ht 21.8cm, Top diam (max) 8cm, Base 6cm |
