Murano style glass vase, bullicante decoration, Julien Macdonald (?), late C20th
A heavy and fine quality glass vase, the body of narrow ovoid form with two rounded flanges at the sides, a small oval opening at the top and the base flat, the glass in tones of green and blue employing ‘sommerso’ effects and the walls with strands of bubbles in the ‘bullicante’ style. There is considerable artistry here and many resemblances to Murano pieces, but the consensus is that vases like this were not made on that famous Venetian island but elsewhere. Most commonly, this and similar designs are attributed to the English designer Julien Macdonald (see image 11) as part of the ‘Star’ range which he produced for the department store Debenhams in the later years of the twentieth century. The country of manufacture, though, is less clear although some suggest that these pieces were, in fact, made in China. But the glass here is much heavier than many if not all of the Chinese pieces now to be found on the market and the workmanship of superior quality so that Western manufacture seems much more likely. None of this should detract, though, from a highly decorative item of exceptional size and quality which would make a striking decorative accessory.
