Candy pattern Vase, Model No 512, Dümler & Breiden, second half C20th
A vase of slender ovoid form with a short foot and a flaring rim, the speckled glaze in colourful tones of red, orange and green with black detail with a swirling design resembling candy stripes, the interior glazed black and the base red with (indistinct) impressed marks, an interlocking ‘DB’ mark resembling crossed swords and the numbers ‘512’.Dumler & Breiden was founded in 1883 by Peter Dümler and Albert Breiden and located in Hohr Grenzhausen. During the late 19th and early 20th century they produced beer steins and punch bowls eventually moving on from the 1950s to joining the other well known West German ceramics manufacturers in producing ‘art pottery’ wares. Their pieces were often more rugged in appearance with an emphasis on colourful and textured glazes, often associated with the ‘fat lava’ style. Production eventually ceased in 1995. It is only the later pieces which were marked with their factory name, and the dating here probably to the 1960s or early 1970s which corresponds with the slightly unusual design of this vase with its semi abstract pattern reflecting contemporary styles of the time.
