Green glaze jug, Jura pattern, Model No 414-16, Scheurich Keramik, second half C20th
A jug, the body of squat cylindrical form curving inwards towards the base and shoulder, the near upright neck below a galleried rim and with a loop handle to the side, the green mottled glaze with swirls and a wavy band in mottled turquoise, the interior glazed brown and the base glazed green with raised moulded marks ‘414-16’ ‘W.GERMANY’.Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. The pattern here with its repeating swirls, was one of Scheurich’s distinctive designs and known as ‘Jura’, although collectors often refer to it as ‘snail’ for rather obvious reasons. It was used to decorate vases and jugs in a variety of colour ranges but looks particularly well in green with the contrasting turquoise highlights. Dating is probably to the 1960s or 1970s.
