LOT NUMBER 27
Jug with banded glaze decoration, Model No 404-20, Scheurich Keramik, 1960s
A jug, the body of near upright cylindrical form tapering inwards towards the base and slightly outwards towards the shoulder which has sharp incurve towards the neck above which is a galleried rim, the side with a simple loop handle, glazed overall in mottled tones of cream, mustard and grey brown, the decoration in indistinctly edged bands, the interior and base also glazed in mottled grey brown with raised moulded marks underneath ‘404-20’ ‘W.GERMANY’.Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the German firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. The decoration here is found on a variety of Scheurich forms and is rather pleasing in its cool restraint. Dating is most likely to the 1960s.
