LOT NUMBER 13
Vase with floral decoration, Model No 553-38, Scheurich Keramik, 1960s
A vase of broad tapering cylindrical form the neck curving inwards towards the ridged galleried rim, glazed in mottled tones of beige and brown divided into three segments, the central beige ground boldly painted with polychrome floral sprays, the interior and base glazed brown with raised moulded marks underneath ‘553-38’ ‘W.GERMANY’.,P. Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. Sometimes a paper label with the factory name was affixed to the surface and, in fact, Model ‘553’ can be found elsewhere with just such a label. The decoration of West German ceramics is usually abstract, relying on patterns and glaze effects, so the naturalistic floral decoration here is rather more unusual. It is combined though with typical Scheurich glaze effects which can be seen elsewhere on pieces included in this auction. Dating is probably to the 1960s.| Size: | Ht 38cm, Width (max) 17cm, |
