LOT NUMBER 12
Dresden style model of a Coach and Horses, probably German early C20th
This is a spirited ceramic model of a Coach and Horses, the coachman himself seated at the front of the carriage with two outriders at the front and back, while inside sits a lady clearly dressed for a ball to which she is presumably being conveyed. A sense of urgency and speed is artfully conveyed, the coachman’s cloak billowing behind him, the outriders’ horses prancing and the carriage horses themselves straining at the reins (now lost) as they speed the vehicle along. The composition sits on a rococo style base with scrolling foliage which complements it well. Considerable care was taken in the manufacture of this piece which has miraculously survived undamaged apart from the loss of the original fitments which would have been made from cotton rope or wire. The detail of the modelling speaks for itself with the addition of the passenger figure cunningly placed inside the carriage. Many German factories made these ‘coach and horse’ models in the late C19th and early C20th and some of their pieces are marked which helps with identification. For all of them the style is clearly ‘Dresden’. Italian ‘Capodimonte’ (see Lot XX) examples also exist but the paste and finish of the base here does suggest German work and the ‘brassy’ effect of the gilding an early C20th dating. Clearly a shelf or mantelpiece ornament designed to be seen best from the front and an item of immediate and obvious appeal both to a contemporary and current audience.Size: | na |
