LOT NUMBER 10
Pair of ceramic Bookends, the three wise monkeys, Czech second half C20th
This is an amusing pair of ceramic bookends, the sides and base with ‘marbled’ decoration in tones of beige and light brown, each with a seated group of the ‘three wise monkeys’ (hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil) in similar colours. The flat base is unglazed and both the pieces have a stamped mark ‘Made in Czechoslovakia’ with one ‘Czechslovakia’ in addition. The mark provides a ‘terminus ante quem’ for the dating since Czechoslovakia split into two countries (Czech republic, Slovakia) in 1992 but beyond that is matter for guesswork since there do not seem to be any similar examples, but 1950s/1960s would seem to be a reasonable assumption. But the humour is there, whatever the date of manufacture!Size: | Base 11cm x 7cm, Side 10.5cm x 7cm |
Weight: | 615gm |
Date: | Second half C20th |
Condition: | Good condition, no issues |
Estimate: | £20 – 30 |
