Majolica Footed Fruit Bowl, Germany, 1930s
An earthenware fruit bowl of shallow circular form with a wavy edge and modelled petals and a flower head to the surface, decorated with brown, cream and orange splash glazes, the underside plain with a cream glaze and three organic form feet. The glaze effects used here, termed ‘majolica’, are a very distant relation to the early tin glazed Italian and Spanish wares which share the name. Nineteenth century majolica made in England and the continent employed a wide variety of brightly coloured glazes applied to elaborate forms some of which had a slightly ‘classical’ feel and some a reflection of ‘rococo’ designs. It is more the latter that we see here and it is usually suggested that these fruit bowls were made in Germany in the 1930s. The design was later taken up and adapted by the post war ‘West German Pottery’ manufacturers which reinforces the provenance here of a piece which is both decorative and practical.| Size: | Diam 27cm, Ht 6.5cm |
