Majolica Jug decorated with Frogs, probably Portuguese, C20th
A majolica jug of naturalistic form, the body modelled as lotus leaves with one pink bloom and the handle as a thorny curved branch on which sit three frogs, the glaze a mixture of greens, blues and brown and the frogs deep beige with their eyes picked out in black, the footrim of the base showing a coarse, near stoneware finish. The work here is almost certainly continental and the closest resemblances to this whimsical creation, not that there are any direct parallels, are to be found in Portugese pottery, which did have a tradition of naturalistic pieces, for example Mafra Palissy ware or pieces from Caldas da Rainha, which continues today. Dating is a matter of guesswork but probably, at least, most likely to be in the second half of the twentieth century.| Size: | Ht (max) 23cm, Width (max) 23.5cm, Depth (max) 17cm, Base (max)14cm x 10.5cm |
