Porcelain Figure of an English Pointer Dog, Lomonosov, USSR late C20th
A porcelain figure of an English Pointer dog, modelled recumbent with its front paws stretched out, its head slightly raised with an expectant expression, the markings on the fur and face highlighted in brown. The underside has a stamped mark in iron red which is for the Lomonosov, factory situated in St Petersburg. With a history of production spanning back to the mid eighteenth century, Lomonosov became well known for its ceramic figures of animals in the mid twentieth century, expressively modelled and brightly coloured, including tigers, giraffes and, as here, dogs. Dating here is determined by the form of the mark which was used from 1986 to 1992. Red was reserved for the best quality pieces and the mark itself is in the Russian alphabet (ЛФЗ), that is ‘LFZ’ in English which is an abbreviation of the factory name ‘Lomonosovkiy Farforoviy Zavod’. In addition are the words, rather indistinct, ‘Made in USSR’ which may imply that the piece was intended for export. There is much appeal here both for lovers of dogs and collectors of decorative porcelain.Size: | 29 cm x 8.5 cm |
