Set of 6 small Art Deco style plates by C.T. Altwasser, Silesia, 1920s/1930s
A set of six porcelain plates, Art Deco style, with fluted edges and a modelled design of four overlapping leaves and basket weave, glazed in shades of green and mustard yellow, the rims gilt and the bases with a transfer mark in blue of an eagle above the initials CT. Carl Tielsch founded the Altwasser factory in 1845. It swiftly became second largest porcelain factory in Silesia, a historical region of Central Europe that lies mostly within Poland, with small parts in the Czech Republic and Germany. After twenty years the factory employeed 1,400 employees. Products of the Tielsch factory quickly became known for their high quality and artistry even being compared to Berlin or Meissen porcelains and seem to have continued to be manufactured until the 1950s, the later pieces being marked first ‘Germany’ then ‘Poland’. The mark here, an eagle above the initials CT, was used from 1875 to 1935 but the style of decoration, which shows the influence of Art Deco pieces, indicates a dating to the 1920s or 1930s. Probably intended as side plates, this set is rather unusual amongst the Altwasser pieces found today and highly attractive.
