Studio Pottery Vase, Splatt Pottery, Cornwall, 1990s
A studio pottery vase stoutly potted and of ovoid globular form with a short neck and flaring rim, the mottled brown glaze with two identical circular panels at the front and reverse with an abstract flowering plant on a light grey mottled ground, the base unglazed with impressed marks ‘SPLATT POTTERY’ ‘MADE IN CORNWALL’. In general, the term ‘splatt’ refers to a pottery technique where paint is applied randomly by splattering or flicking it onto the body of the piece, but it was adopted by Alexander Kennedy as the name of his pottery studio based at Splatt, Tresmeer, Launceston, Cornwall where he worked during the 1990s. His pots were pleasing to the eye, often with a slightly rustic appearance and they are clearly marked, as here. Kennedy’s technique was assured and this vase can well stand comparison with the productions of the rather better known studio potters making it an attractive ‘entry level’ acquisition for those interested in the genre.Size: | H 24 cm W 20 cm |
