LOT NUMBER 12
West German Keramik Jug with drip glaze, second half C20th
A ceramic jug the angular body narrowing sharply to the base and short neck with a large loop handle to the side, glazed in matt black with two bands of mottled grey splash glaze. Marked ‘W.Germany’ with what is probably the form mark ‘4709’ and the size ‘18’ [cm], this piece does not have any easy parallels and another piece with the central mark of a ‘V’ in an oval frame does not seem to appear. The general style is clearly ‘West German Keramik’ but the main producers, Bay and Scheurich do not seem to have made anything similar. There are some resemblances, though, to pieces made by the firm Jasba who seem to have worked with these matt glazes and grey colours. Their pieces are marked ‘W.Germany’ with the form mark which is at least consistent with this. The cool elegance of the shape and decoration certainly make an interesting contrast with the more colourful wares produced by the West German factories after the war.Size: | Ht 19cm, Width (max) 15cm, Base Diam 6.5cm |
