Butterfly brooch by Marius Hammer (1847-1927), Bergen, Norway

This is a very fine example of the work by the well known Norwegian goldsmith Marius Hammer (1847 - 1927). It is one of his most popular designs, a butterfly with guilloche enamel wings and body. The wings are turquoise, the body is blue and the eyes are red enamel. It is all done in silver with a gold finish on the reverse and it is marked Sterling 930S and then with his monogram which is an M with a hammer intersecting it. This is quite a unique piece as it is one of the largest examples of the butterfly designs with a wingspan of 8 cm (the most commonly found size is 6.2 cm). The gilt detail on the edge of the wings is also seldom seen.
MARIUS HAMMER BIO:
Marius Hammer built up and managed Norway's largest goldsmith's workshop in the decades around 1900. By investing heavily in marketing and international launch, he helped make Norwegian enamelwork an important export item. In a golden age for Norwegian handicrafts, Hammer's company also delivered many works that are among the main works of Norwegian goldsmithing.
Hammer was a third-generation goldsmith in the traditional craft town of Bergen. In his father's workshop, he received training in an ancient guild craft, but his ambitions were greater than running a small workshop, as his father and grandfather had done. During his studies in Hamburg and Berlin around 1870, he gained insight into new techniques and production methods, and from 1871 he built up his workshop to become the largest in Bergen in a few years. He had modern aids such as gas and electricity installed early on.
The workshop made all types of goldsmith's wares: centerpieces, jugs, coffee sets, cutlery, jewelry and much more. However, from the 1880s, Hammer focused on the tourist market and became a major producer of souvenirs and other luxury items in filigree and enamel. He built up a network of branches in the well-known tourist destinations in Western Norway, and he also supplied large quantities of goods to businesses abroad, including London. From 1885, Hammer's company was court supplier to the Prince of Wales, and somewhat later the German Emperor Wilhelm II became an avid customer. The main product was filigree work with window enamel – glass mosaics in all the colors of the rainbow built up on a fragile network of thin, gilded threads. Small and large Viking ships in various price ranges for tourists, boots, teaspoons, jewelry and much more were produced in a wide variety and in large quantities. Around 1914, the company reached its peak with about 130 employees.
The key to Hammer's success in the tourist market was very active marketing, including through participation in the major world exhibitions. Together with the Kristiania firms Tostrup and David-Andersen, Hammer made enamelware one of the most important Norwegian exports.
In addition to souvenir production, Hammer also had an important production of corpus works, i.e. objects such as bowls, jugs and mugs. He invested heavily in prestige works for exhibition purposes and for the upper bourgeoisie, and a number of essays and other large corpus works are of greater artistic interest than souvenir production. Hammer engaged outstanding designers, and over the prosperous years from about 1900 to about 1920 the firm produced works that are now considered masterpieces in the goldsmith's art of the period.
Marius Hammer became Bergen's richest craftsman; he lived at the elegant country estate Christinegård in Sandviken and had himself driven in a two-horse carriage to his shop in Strandgaten. He built up a large collection of antiques and also traded in these in his shop.
With the outbreak of World War I, the tourists disappeared, and after the war, times became tougher for the luxury production that Hammer had focused on. The company was converted into a limited liability company in 1915, with his eldest son Torolf as director. However, he died in 1920, and from then on the company went into decline. Neither the old Marius Hammer nor his youngest son Max, who took over as manager, were able to carry out the radical restructuring that was necessary to adapt to the changing times. Shortly after Marius Hammer died in 1927, the company's properties and most of the machinery were sold, and the remnants of the company went into bankruptcy in 1930. Edwardian Egyptian Revival necklace, inscribed and dated 1910

This is a wonderful necklace in the Egyptian Revival style comprising silver filigre stations mounted with large Cairngorm citrine stones that vary in size from 63 mm and 105 mm. It is inscribed "Hedydd from her godparents C A.M. J J.H-J E.H-J July 14th 1910"
Stunning Art Deco Indian silver neck ring and bracelet c1920

This is a very rare set of a necklace and bracelet that is Indian in origin. It is very heavy and has a twisted design with dual rams’ heads. The rams’ heads are very detailed, and this quality continues throughout both pieces.
Both have a very strong bolt type clasp that allows the two pieces to open and then it is locked in place. The clasp mechanism is crafted from iron and not silver. This is to ensure that it remains strong and in position.
This design is very well known in many cultures but is probably best known in Greek and Etruscan jewellery. These pieces might have been commissioned and were most likely made for a man. The size fits both genders but it is so chunky that it doesn’t seem likely to have been made for a woman during the 1920s.
They would look great on anyone today!
Silver and marcasite statement brooch, 1956

This is a real showstopper of a brooch. It is very large in a floral spray and ribbon design. It has numerous silver marks including an English import mark from 1956. The other marks indicate that it is most likely continental possibly Belgian or Swiss.
What stands out with this brooch is the quality of the workmanship. It is encrusted with hundreds of marcasite stones that are all prong set. There is not one missing stone. We get so used the costume versions of a brooch like this; it is such a pleasure to see an original.
Art Nouveau William Comyns silver buckle, 1901

This is a piece of true Art Nouvea design. It is a ladies silver buckle by silver maker William Comyns. It bears the hallmarks for Comyns, London 1901. There is also a design patent number Rd No 564 383.
William Comyns founded the company in 1858. He initially operated from the former premises of silversmith Robert Tagg at 2 Carlisle Street, Soho, London, where he registered his first maker’s mark (W.C in a four-tipped oval) in 1859. Comyns’ silverware was retailed by some of the world’s most prestigious firms, including Tiffany & Co., The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, and leading London retailers such as Henry Lewis and Howell & James.

This is a silver bar brooch set with European cut diamonds and a large blue zircon. It is set in an elegant Art Deco design that shows off the central stone. It is unmarked.
Pietra Dura jasper moth brooch c1920

This is a very rare pietra dura brooch that features inlay jasper in the shape of a moth. There are thee types of jasper finished off with malachite around the edge of the wings. There are also glass beads inset to mimick that markings. It is set in typical rolled gold.
Art Deco brooch with Shibayama style mother of pearl plaque c1920

This is a very rare silver brooch comprising a large oval onyx stone set with a very detailed and fine carved mother of pearl plaque. This is either a nod to Japanese shibayama designs or it was indeed imported from Japan and set into the brooch. The floral pattern shimmers and dances with the light and there is so much detail. It is a real work of art. It is set wth marcasite stones around the edge. It is marked illegibly but it is continental. Most likely French or Belgian.
French enamel egyptian revival bracelet c1900

This is a very delicate bracelet comprisng stations with enamel work that depict Egyptian iconography. This was most liklely a souvenir from the Paris Worlds Fair in 1900 where Egypt featured prominently.
Outstanding Art Deco necklace with French jet and rock crystal beads c1920

This is a stunning and rare necklace comprising French jet glass beads combinded with facetted rock crystal beads. There are two stations that are tear drop shaped that have both French jet and crystal elements, this is very typical of the Art Deco period in jewellery. This necklace has been recenlty restrung to ensure that it is strong.

This is a lovely silver stickpin style brooch set with large citrines and pink sapphires. It is in a spray design with scrollwork and beading. This is Indian in origin and it unmarked.
Large round Scottish agate cloak pin c 1900

This brooch is a traditional Scottish cloak pin and would have been used on the should to hold the cloak in place. This one is a particularly nice example as it has a very intricate twisted design that includes all type of Scottish Agate such as jasper and blood stone. This brooch is unmarked which is not unusual for Scottish silver of this type.

This is an unusual pendant of paddle shape and with detailed millegrain work. It is set with a garnet and has 5 drops. It is paired with a late belcher chain. The pendant is unmarked 900 grade silver, the chain is 925 silver.
Italian Niello work Cuff bracelet c1960

This is a very interesting an large cuff bracelet comprising very detailed silver work and neillo techniques. It is maked 925.
Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished metal around it.

This is a striking pair of earrings comprising three drops of incised silverwork with drops. The silver has been plated with gold and rose gold to give a tri colour effect. Is marked 925.
Necklace with massive Agate Disc strung set with facetted ruby beads, India, c1940

This is a very substantial and heavy necklace that features a very large banded agate stone mounted in silver and set with facetted rubies. The necklace is strung with very large facetted ruby beads that are approximatelyl 12 mm wide. This really is a one off. It is from India and may have been a commissioned piece. It has been restrung recently on metal cord with a new clasp so is quite strong. The ruby beads are particularly interesting and hard to find in this size.
Indian tribal necklace, 19th century

This is a very unusual and rare tribal necklace that is from India, most likely from the Rajasthan region. It features a large silver disc with a free form design, This is strung with a necklace that has thousands of garnet beads. The pendant is marked 925 which indicates that it was exported to the west.

This is a rather fabulous necklace that feature very large tubular beads that are half crystal and half onyx. They ae paired with smaller crystal beads with black inclusions. The large beads adre very unusual. It has a silver clasp.

This is excellent quality amber necklace. Each bead is carved in a triangular shape to complement the geometric pendant. This beads are graduated which adds to the elegance of this long necklace. There are a few types of amber here honey, cognac and egg yolk.
Three strand pearl necklace with mother of pearl plaque, c2000

This is a real show stopper of a necklace. It comprises three strands of lustrous fresh water cultured pearls that end in a feature clasp that is a carved mother of pearl plaque of a young lady. This is an modern interpretation of a 19th century design that would not have been attainable for most people. Thanks to cultured pearls these pieces are now affordable. This is an excellent example due to the quality of the pearls and the carving.
Zoisite pendant on necklace with zoisite beads, modern

This is a very unique and beautiful necklace that centres around a modernist pendant that has two large ruby zoisite stones. The square stone is a true work of art that only nature can create. The pendant is strung together with zoisite roundel beads and silver beads. There is a round box clasp. It is marked 925.
Ruby Zoisite, or Anyolite, is a natural combination of green zoisite and red ruby, primarily sourced from Tanzania. This pendant is most likely from Scandinavia or Eastern Europe. This necklace has been constructed using different elements. It has recently been strung on steel wire with a new silver clasp.

This is an amazing necklace that has a double row with stations of graduated amoeba shaped large lapis lazuli stones. It was made by a company called East a high end fashion brand. It bears a small metal tag with the name. It is strung with gold tone circular links, that are now mostly silver in colour.

This is a very sleek necklace with a geometric pendant on a torque necklace. The pendant has a half moon shaped Lapis Lazuli stone and a fancy cut five sided lemon quartz stone. This is a very elegant and balanced piece. Both pendant and necklace are marked 925.
Egyptian cuff bracelet c1970

This is a very detailed Egyptian silver cuff bracelet that depicts many of the Egyptian hieroglyphic symbols such as the Anke, Scarab, Cartouche and Pyramid. These symbols are raised with the background being oxidized. It is unmarked, although Egyptian hallmarks can be very small and well hidden. It tests as silver.

This is a very lovely quality guilloche enamel butterfly brooch in pink, yellow and lavendar. It is from Norway and can be attributed to Hroar Prydz but it is not marked with his mark so it could be from another workshop. This design was very popular so there would have been those who made similar designs. It is marked Sterling.
Native american Spencer opal earrings, c1970

This is a very rare pair of earrings that are set with large pear shaped opals from the Spencer mine in Idaho. They are set in a typical Native American setting, most likely Zuni. They are marked Spencer Sterling to indicate the origin of the opals.
Taxco silver modernist earrings c1950

This is a wonderful example of Taxco Mexcian jewellery that has become so collectible. It is a paid of screw back earrings in a modern shape that is so indicative of Taxco design. This was an extension of American Art Deco that was brought to Mexico by William Spratling in the 1930s. These are from that early period as can be seen by the marks. They are marked Made in Mexico, Sterling 925 with a makers mark of JSE.

This is a really fun necklace that comprises numerous diffferent shaped and coloured pieces of amber. There are honey, congnac, egg yolk colours all polished in their natural shapes to bring out the natural inclusions. It is strung with small wooden beads on brown cord.

This is quite an unusual necklace comprising five strands of small coral beads that are twisted together. It has a matching clasp that is set with a coral stone. The beads are angel skin coral which comes from mainly Japan and Taiwan. The clasp is gold tone. The beads are most likely colour enhanced due to the uniformity. This is very common but it does effect the value somewhat.

This is a fun Taxco piece that has a large pendant in an Aztec type design set with a turquoise stone. It is strung on a leather cord that has silver links and a toggle closure. This cord is original to the piece as they cannot be seperated. It is marked Taxco, Mexico 925 with a makers mark of GJB.

This is an amazing locket that is a perfect example of the Aesthetic Movement in Britian. This was aligned with Arts and Crafts but the Aesthetic designs featured classical and Japanese designs that were considered more opulent and elegant than the over the top designs of the Victorian period. It was a response to the mass consumerism that was taking over Britian during this time. This locket is marked with full English marks. It is paired with a belcher chain of a similar age.

Florentine style lapis and silver brooch c1900

This is a intricate brooch designed with scroll work and column details. It is Scottish due to the thistle design on the east west corners. This was always included in Scottish designs as it is the national flower.

This is a a very unusual necklace comprising numerous small discs of turquoise that graduate down to a minute size. They are interspersed with silver and onyx discs. The metal is silver however probably a lower grade or 800 silver. It is quite small for all you swans, but could easily work with an extender.
Victorian Silver Buckle set with Paste Stones, German circa 1900

This is a striking silver buckle of rectangular form with two bands of brilliant paste stones surrounding four stylised flower head paste stone clusters, the reverse plain and marked 900 which implies manufacture in Germany where the standard for silver was a minimum of 800 parts to 1000 with 900 parts to 1000 as one of the alternatives (as opposed to the more usually found 925). There is in addition a double mark with a star and a wheel which may well be the maker's mark, but this is hard to identify.
The sparkling stones and high quality mounting (there is a considerable weight of silver in this piece) would have made this buckle a notable addition to the Victorian ladies' wardrobe and it could equally well catch the eye today.

Both fish have full English hallmarks that are so small they seem illegible.
