Pair of Royal Doulton Spill Vases with gilt decoration, 1920s
A pair of pottery vases of upright spill form with wide flat bases, the body glazed in mottled blue with two bands of curved raised bead work with leaves and rosettes, the centre with an incised design of overlapping whorl pattern, gilt, the base glazed in mottled brown and the interior in mottled aubergine, the foot unglazed and with an impressed mark ‘Royal Doulton England’, a model number ‘8409’, artist’s marks ‘a’ and ‘hd’ and another script mark. The mark for Doulton is one of the standard impressed 'Royal Doulton England' marks where the lettering forms part of a circle combined with three thick lines and the centre is filled with four interlocking 'D's. The addition of a lion but not with the usual accompanying crown allows a fairly precise dating to between 1923 and 1927. This fits with the form and decoration which have an almost Art Deco feel. It seems that two different artists worked on these pieces, ‘a’ standing for Louisa Ayling and ‘hd’ for E Violet Hayward. The pattern number ‘8409’ occurs on other pieces of the same shape and but these usually have the central section left in plain biscuit.
