Studio Pottery Vase, Leeds Fire Clay Lefco, circa 1900
A studio pottery vase of elegant bottle form, the squat base rising to a flaring neck, glazed overall in brown with a feint craquelure effect and with raised coloured slip decoration boldly depicting flowering chrysanthemum in yellows, greens and browns, the top interior and base finished in mustard yellow. This vase is attributed to the Leeds Fire Clay Company which was formed in 1889 by the amalgamation of various companies in the area including Wilcock & Co of Burmantofts, The Farnley Iron co and The Wortley Fireclay Co. Much of the production centred on architectural items, often utilitarioan, and 'Lefcoware' garden ornamaents became a staple product in the early 1900s. Burmantofts ceased production of their well known decorative vases around 1904 and this piece seems to have been one of their successors. As the two potting lines on each side indicate, it was mould made not modelled on a potter's wheel, and this is consistent with the type of wares produced by Lefco generally. The aesthetic is clearly reminiscent of the early 1900s and the form and decoration combine to produce a highly decorative item which would not be out of place in a contemporary interior.| Size: | Ht 31cm, Width (max) 22cm, Base Diam 10.5cm |
