Yellow ground Bursley Ware Dragon Bowl by Frederick Rhead, circa 1920
A shallow ceramic bowl of squat form with a turnover rim, resembling a Chinese brushwasher, the yellow lustre glaze with a feint craquelure and boldly decorated with an interior design of a dragon pursuing the flaming pearl amidst seaweed, the exterior with two similar dragons, all coloured in bright shades of red and green with the outline design in blue, the base glazed and with the mark ‘Dragon’ within a rococo style border and the manufacturer’s name ‘Bursley Ware England’. From 1910 to 1982, the firm Wood and Sons Ltd operated potteries at the Trent, New Wharf and Stanley Potteries Burslem. Throughout its history the firm produced high quality earthenware pieces aimed at the middle market, using a variety of brand names including Bursley Ware. Frederick Alfred Rhead, the Father of Charlotte Rhead, was a ceramicist and designer who worked for Bursley Ware in the 1920s and 1930s. The ‘Dragon’ pattern is one of his best known designs and was made in a variety of forms and colours including white and orange. The yellow glaze here is particularly effective and the piece combines Chinese inspired designs with an Art Deco twist to produce an object with decorative appeal even today.
