Chinese Brass Vase decorated with dragons, circa 1900
A Chinese Brass or Polished Bronze Vase with a rounded baluster form body and a broad neck flaring out to the top, decorated with a confronting pair of dragons pursuing the flaming pearl amidst clouds and waves with scrolling chrysanthemum to the reverse, the neck similarly decorated with a single dragon and pearl, the base with a cast seven character mark, possibly apocryphal. Vases of this type, usually in pairs, were exported to the West in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Usually they are decorated with dragons but figure scene examples are known. The quality was not uniform but this is a good example as can be seen from the detail of the casting and the treatment of the dragons' heads where both teeth and a tongue are clearly shown. The wood stand is Chinese and probably contemporary.Size: | Ht 25.3 cm; base 7.2 cm; ht (with stand) 27.5 cm |
