LOT NUMBER 4

Chinese Celadon Glaze Bottle Vase with White Slip decoration, Jingdezhen mark, C20th

A Chinese Vase of bottle form, the globular body rising to a straight neck with a short foot, covered all over in a celadon glaze and highlighted at the front with decoration in white slip depicting birds on branches of flowering lotus, the design continuing towards the rear. The base with a four character seal mark in underglaze blue reading 'Jing-De-Zhen-Zi', indicating manufacture at the well known kiln town of Jingdezhen in the Jiangxi province. Celadon pieces with white slip decoration, usually depicting birds and flowers, seem to have been first produced in China in the nineteenth century. Vases and garden seats are the most commonly found forms. This vase continues the style and the quality of the glaze and decoration compares very well with its predecessors. The mark is found on other pieces and seems first to have been used around 1950 but was still employed around forty years later so dating must also take into account the quality of the decoration and the paste of the foot, both of which suggest the mid C20th here.
