Chinese Cloisonne Shallow Bowl, C19th
A Chinese cloisonne shallow bowl of typical form with a compressed globular body, a wide opening with a gilt metal rim, a short gilt metal foot, the interior and the base enamelled in blue and the exterior decorated in cloisonne enamels with multicoloured floral blooms on a green ground with repeating a repeating fish scale border at the base and a band of ‘ju’i’ lappets at the top. The cloisonné technique, where glass derived enamels are inlaid between gilt metal outline designs, the so called 'cloisons' or 'partitions', was developed in China from as early as the fourteenth century and employed continuously thereafter, even until the present day. The weight of this piece and the quality of the decoration suggests a dating to the nineteenth century, perhaps towards the middle. Certainly, it is a much above average example of a form which was to be produced in substantial quantities in the early years of the twentieth century for export to the West.
