Chinese porcelain Plate in the Mille Fleur Pattern, Qianlong Mark, mid C20th
A porcelain plate of typical form with a shallow well and a flat rim, richly decorated to the front in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels with densely arranged floral blooms (peony, chrysanthemum, lotus) on a gold ground, the reverse plain and with an apocryphal four character mark in iron red reading ‘Qianlong Nian Zhi’ (Made in the Qianlong period). This sumptuous floral design, often termed ‘mille fleur’ (thousand flowers) was developed by the Chinese in the mid eighteenth century (Qianlong period 1736-1795) and employed for the next two hundred years or more. The paste and finish of the foot, the rather scrappy calligraphy of the mark and the ‘brassy’ effect gilt work imply a fairly recent dating here but quality is still there and this plate can certainly stand comparison with its earlier predecessors.| Size: | Diam 20.5cm |
