LOT NUMBER 197
Fine Quality Japanese Plate decorated Carp, signed, early C20th
A fine quality Japanese porcelain plate with a lightly scalloped edge, decorated to the centre with two carp swimming amidst reeds within an elaborate border of stylised floral sprays in blue between cloud form segments in brown and gilt, the reverse with a three character script mark. Unfortunately, the artist cannot be identified from his signature but there are elements here in common with various of the Japanese potteries producing pieces for export in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including those at Kutani and Seto along with the ubiquitous output from Noritake. But the craftsmanship here is not in doubt and the representation of the two carp, symbols to the Japanese of good fortune and friendship, highly skilful. The style of painting and the paste of the foot suggests a dating to the early twentieth century, probably to the Taisho period (1912-1924).| Size: | Diam (max) 21.5cm, Ht 2.5cm, Base 12cm |
