LOT NUMBER 108

Fine Quality Japanese Yixing style Teapot decorated locust, signed, mid C20th

This is an extremely fine quality earthenware teapot made from a refined clay (see image 9) closely resembling that of the celebrated Chinese Yixing wares but clearly of Japanese origin. The form is simple, the squat round body with a simple loop handle and a short spout and fitted with a flush fitting lid which completes the profile, the ball form lid knob pierced to allow the escape of steam. The surface finish has a feint glaze to it, unlike most of the Chinese pieces, and is subtly mottled to imitate bronze. The plain surface is interrupted by an incised representation of a locust to the front, a symbol of reincarnation or sometimes, and less inspirationally, sadness. The artist has placed his mark to the base with a smaller stamped seal to the underside of the handle. No doubt he was justifiably pleased with his work. Style suggests the mid C20th but there are no easy parallels for this piece which must, for the moment, stand on its own then, but its artistry and the skill of its maker are easy to appreciate.
